SKIP HIRE IN DEVON – HOW TO LOAD THAT PERFECT SKIP!

SKIP HIRE IN DEVON – HOW TO LOAD THAT PERFECT SKIP!

With hundreds of skips coming and going each week from EMS you wouldn’t believe the way some of the skips are loaded! So here’s a lesson in how to load a skip efficiently. Believe it or not, it will help you get more for your money.

If you want to save money on your renovation project, you need to ensure that you load your skip efficiently. If you overfill your skip you could face a fine. To get the most value for your money follow our tips for filling a skip.

We do get the odd customer worthy of a GOLD STAR. Here’ s a couple of examples of how to do it properly

ORGANISE YOUR WASTE

Before placing any items into your skip, you should separate your waste into the following categories (unless of course there’s only one material being disposed of such as inert waste)

FLAT ITEMS SUCH AS –

Cardboard

Styrofoam

Paper

Wooden veneer

TESSELLATE OBJECTS SUCH AS –

Bricks

Tiles

Worktop panels

BULKY ITEMS SUCH AS –

Furniture

Cupboards

Wardrobes

LOOSE DEBRIS SUCH AS –

Sand

Gravel

Soil

BE AWARE OF ANY PROHIBITED ITEMS WHEN SORTING THROUGH AND LOADING YOUR WASTE. YOU MIGHT BE PENALISED IF YOU LOAD A SKIP WITH PROHIBITED ITEMS

PROHIBITED ITEMS INCLUDE –

WEEE waste (e.g. computers, mobile phones)

Medical waste

Batteries

Paints

Solvents

Explosives

The removal of these items requires specialist services. Give us a call if you have hazardous items to dispose of.

RIGHT LET’S START LOADING

FIRST LAYER – FLAT ITEMS

Make sure that all items are as flat as possible before loading the skip. This means flattening all cardboard boxes.

Begin loading the skip by placing your flat items at the base. You should try and fill the whole area as evenly as you can. These items will be compounded by your heavier items once they’re loaded.

SECOND LAYER – TESSELLATE ITEMS

Place tessellate items on top of the flat items, joining items together to make layers. So if you have a group of bricks for example, arrange them to complete a single layer of bricks across the base. Then, move onto a second layer and so on.

THIRD LAYER – BULKY ITEMS

Break down your bulky items into smaller pieces. For example the legs of a table should be removed from the tabletop. Most pieces of furniture should have some removable components.

Place the flattest items in the skip first. Then add the bulkier items. Try to fill all available space instead of stacking items on top of one another.

FOURTH LAYER – LOOSE DEBRIS

Fill the remaining pockets of space with loose debris. Pour the debris into any gaps or nooks that have formed from the bulkier items.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Do not overfill your skip. An overfilled skip can be dangerous to transport and will usually land you with a fine. If you have followed the guidelines and are still unable to fit everything in your skip you will probably need to order a second skip. Give us a call or book online.

A handy tip to avoid these problems is to use some foresight and order a skip of the perfect size for your project. On our Skip Hire page you can see the measurements of our skips by length, height and width. There’s even a handy little guide using a commonly known car to give you a better idea of skip size. This should ensure you get the right skip for your job.

WHAT CAN YOU PUT IN YOUR SKIP AND WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO PACK IT ALL IN?

WHAT CAN YOU PUT IN YOUR SKIP AND WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO PACK IT ALL IN?

NEED SKIP HIRE IN EXETER? WE SHARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR THE BEST WAY TO MAXIMIZE THE SPACE IN YOUR SKIP.

Learning how to pack your skip to make the most of the space is important. Whether its a good clear out at home or the office read our top tips for the best way to pack your skip efficiently. By following our useful tips you can make the best use of the space you have, minimize the number of collections you need, and best of all spend less money on disposing of your waste.

LET’S CHECK WHAT CAN AND CAN’T BE LOADED

One of the first things to think about is what you actually can or can’t include in your skip. There are some items which are completely unacceptable such as paint and asbestos etc. So bear that in mind before you start or you may find yourself having to unload and remove items from your skip which is a waste of time for everyone.

LET’S GET STARTED! HEAVIEST ITEMS GO IN FIRST

So lets start with the heaviest items first. Lay heavy flat items first to form a nice solid base for the rest of your rubbish. Then you can start to load the rest with the biggest, heavy and awkward shaped items. You can then use all the other remaining space around the skip (including the corners) with the smaller items.

SQUISH THE SMALLER ITEMS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN

For smaller items try to squash them as much as possible. Things such as cardboard boxes can be broken down and wedged in any gaps you have ensuring you sue up all the space available in your skip. Make sure you push the smaller items down as far as you can to stop too much movement or to stop things from blowing out.

WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO WE OFFER?

As well as Skip Hire we also offer a full waste management service, waste recycling, commercial waste removal, green waste, asbestos collection and have a Scrap metal service. You can also book your skip online if that’s more convenient for you?

Stuarts EMS support Courageous Cory by donating a skip

Stuarts EMS support Courageous Cory by donating a skip

Here at EMS and Bay Skips we pride ourselves on our customer service and approach and are always happy to help any worthy cause we can get involved with.

Courageous Cory’s story really touched us and we were more than happy to help the family with the donation of a skip. A small act of support for an amazing family and a truly inspirational little boy.

Below is a bit of history about Cory along with a link to their Facebook page and fundraiser to improve their home for Cory’s safety and wellbeing. This brave family need all the support they can get and are immensely grateful for all the help they receive. This is a truly worthwile cause and just a little help can change their quality of life.

Cory’s Story

Cory is 7 years old from Brixham in Devon. He was born with moderate to severe hearing loss and had his first set of hearing aids at 9 weeks old. All was well until at 5 months old he started having Infantile Spasms, a rare type of epilepsy. The usual drugs didnt work and he lost all of his developmental skills within a week of being at the hospital. He even lost the ability to smile, couldnt move and would cry a lot.

The Doctors didnt know why the drugs werent stopping the seizures and his Mum noticed he wasn’t looking at things anymore. He was then diagnosed with Cortical Visual Impairment and was registered blind before his first birthday. A deafblind baby.

The drugs failed to ease the epilepsy and Cory was left with severe learning difficulties and very limited mobility. He became extremely tactile and defensive and wouldn’t let anything touch his hands. The world was very scary and frightening. and because he didn’t know what was being fed into his mouth he also developed severe food aversion. After many years of his mum and the school trying to encourage him to eat orally, the decision was made for him to have a gastrostomy tube (PEG) fitted.

What does the future hold for Cory?

There is still no formal diagnosis yet. Cory is part of two genetic studies which have yet to find a cause after many years of waiting.

His Mummy says, “he is a very unique little boy and loves life!”

Just4Children is trying to raise monies for urgent and vital adaptions to Cory’s home to improve the quality of his life.

Just4Children

Just4Children is passionate about the relief of sickness & preservation of good physical & mental health of children & young people under 25 years resident in the United Kingdom & Ireland by providing & assisting in the provision of services & grants to enable them to obtain their medical needs.

Please follow the link to their Facebook page and just giving page where you can also help improve the quality of life for this beautiful little boy and his family.

The family need help modifying their home. The proposed extension would greatly improve the quality of life for Cory and the family. As Cory is getting older and heavier, a ground floor bedroom and wet room with hoist will mean that they won’t have to carry him up and down the stairs and lift him in and out of the bath.

A storeroom for all of Cory’s equipment will mean more space for the family and a purpose built sensory room will provide Cory with a safe area to explore and seek out stimulation.

RORO at the West Cornwall Truck Show

Sometimes a day out is just what everyone needs, and this was true for us here at EMS Waste too!

It wasn’t the most beautiful day weather-wise back in the ‘summer’, but we put a good show on at the West Cornwall Truck Show, where one of our drivers, Darrell, took one of our ROROs (Roll On Roll Off, a type of skip container). The truck, and the skip on its back, both shone after some polishing and elbow grease, even despite the lack of sun, and gave the curious public a chance to have a good look at what we can do.

A RORO is a great skip for almost any occasion. It is mobile, quickly transported on the back of a truck, and sturdy. As such, it can be moved into position when you need it, but taken away as soon as you want it gone. There are skips available in every size, from the massive containers required at building sites, to smaller ones that can be parked in front of your home while you rip out your bathroom or kitchen over a weekend. A Roll On Roll Off skip can be your new best friend. And, you can rent it for however long you need it for, whether it is for just a weekend, or for longer-term rents where we will come by to change it once it is full.

Plus, we can make your life extra easy by dropping off a skip where you want it, picking it up again, and then taking it back to our waste transfer station to be processed. We are dedicated to helping the environment by making sure we recycle as much of what comes out of our skips as we can, so that’s another worry wiped away.

We’ve been on the move!

As you know Dusty Bin are now part of EMS Waste. This exciting partnership means that EMS Waste is now even bigger and able to provide waste management services to more people within the Devon and Plymouth areas.

Dusty Bin has now settled into their new site, but we thought we’d share a little bit about the exciting journey with you and what services they can offer.

Moving day

The moving day itself was a busy and eventful one. At least it was easy to find a skip! Moving into the new cabin on the EMS Waste site included a day of carrying out repairs in order to pimp up the office area. In fact, this process took several weeks, but on September 9th the office was finished and ready for business.

During the renovation process, the top of the cabin was removed to fix holes! In fact, it was touch and go at the time to see if they could be fixed, so quotes were also obtained. But, luckily, the cabin roof was easily fixed and made water tight. Walls were painted (narrowly missing a member of staff, who nearly got painted into a corner), the floor repaired and the CCTV disconnected, then reconnected. The entire cabin was also cleaned from top to bottom. Everything was done and ticked off the to-do list, apart from the hot tub request that was sadly declined! Needless to say, the Dusty Bin office staff are now settled in and are getting to know their yard colleagues.

Still the same great service

Dusty Bin is still offering the same great services it has always delivered to the residents and businesses of Plymouth and Devon. The only difference is that the team is now based in a new yard and are part of EMS Waste. We offer skip hire and waste management services which include recycling and waste collection. To learn more, simply get in touch with us today.
