Where did the skip even come from and when?

THE SKIP HAS BECOME AN ESSENTIAL ITEM FOR THOSE CLEARING THEIR HOME OR PLACE OF BUSINESS OF UNWANTED CLUTTER BUT HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW IT CAME TO BE?

WE THINK YOU’LL FIND THIS INTERESTING!

Here are 5 little-known facts about the humble skip. You can use this trivia and store it away in your brain until that all important pub quiz question when you can swoop in and nail it for your team!

1. THE SKIP FIRST CAME TO BRITAIN IN THE SWINGING 60’S

IT WAS DURING THE HEIGHT OF LEGENDARY BANDS LIKE THE BEATLES IN THE 1960’S THAT SKIPS FIRST APPEARED ON BRITISH SHORES WHICH COINCIDED WITH RECYCLING IN THE UK BECOMING ROUTINE. THEY WERE IMPORTED FROM GERMANY, LEADING NICELY ONTO ONE OF OUR NEXT FACTS…

2. SKIPS ORIGINALLY CAME IN ONE STANDARD SIZE

AT EMS WASTE SERVICES WE SUPPLY SKIPS IN A VARIETY OF SIZES, FROM 2.5YD SKIPS TO 35/40YD RORO SKIPS. BUT DID YOU KNOW THE FIRST SKIPS TRADITIONALLY MEASURED BETWEEN 5-6 CUBIC YARDS.

3. THE GERMANS CAME UP WITH THE FAMILIAR SKIP PLACING

IT HAS BECOME CUSTOMARY FOR A SKIP TO BE DELIVERED TO AND PLACED AT THE FRONT OF A PROPERTY OR COMMERCIAL BUILDING AND IT WAS THE GERMANS WHO FIRST CAME UP WITH THIS NOVEL CONCEPT.

4. THE COST OF THE FIRST SKIPS WAS SURPRISINGLY EXPENSIVE

SKIPS WERE INITIALLY THE PRESERVE OF THE RICH AS THEY COST £5, WITH A FURTHER 3 SHILLINGS DAILY RENTAL CHARGE. THAT MAY NOT SEEM LIKE A LOT, BUT IT WAS BACK IN THOSE DAYS. YOU ALSO HAD TO PAY AN EXTRA 7 SHILLINGS FOR THE WASTE TO BE TRANSFERRED TO A NEARBY LANDFILL.

5. YELLOW HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE STANDARD COLOUR

IN THE 1970’S, THE HIGHWAYS ACT DETERMINED THAT SKIPS SHOULD ALL BE YELLOW COLOURED TO MAKE THEM PROMINENT DURING THE HOURS OF DARKNESS. THIS RULING HAS BEEN RELAXED SINCE, BUT THOSE SKIPS NOT IN THE CONVENTIONAL YELLOW HAVE TO BE APPROPRIATELY LIT AND MARKED.

Is there really any point to a Mini Skip?

Is there really any point to a Mini Skip?

AS YOU CAN TELL BY THE NAME, MINI SKIPS ARE SMALL. MEASURING IN AT 2.5 CUBIC YARDS OF CAPACITY, THEY’RE THE SAME SHAPE AS THEIR BIGGER COUSINS, JUST ON A MUCH SMALLER SCALE!

BUT IF THEY’RE SO SMALL, HOW CAN THEY POSSIBLY BE USEFUL?

SOME JOBS ARE JUST RIGHT FOR A MINI SKIP!

There’s a surprising number of jobs that suit mini skip hire perfectly – both domestic and commercial.

One of the most common commercial applications for a mini skip is for the disposal of plasterboard, which can’t be mixed with other kinds of waste.

Contractors will hire a mini skip as a secondary option for disposing of drywall and keeping it separate from other materials for easier processing. A secondary mini skip is sometimes used to clear up general waste produced on site and for a final cleanup once a job is completed.

SO WHY ARE MINI SKIPS POPULAR FOR DOMESTIC PROJECTS?

Domestic skip hire customers love mini skips! Because they’re usually just the right size for a small DIY job. Also, their low height makes them very easy to fill with little more than a wheelbarrow for assistance. Plus, the small footprint of mini skips means they’ll fit on most driveways with plenty of room left over to park a car.

As an added bonus, they’re more cost effective to hire than a full size skip, making them a very attractive proposition indeed.

Garden clearances, bathroom refurbishment and even a small kitchen renovation could all be completed with a mini skip.
And even though 2.5 cubic yards doesn’t sound like a lot, you’d be surprised at what you can fit in there.

MINI SKIP – WHAT CAN YOU FIT INSIDE?

Mini skips are deceptively big and you’ll be able to get a lot in there. A bit like Mary Poppins bag!!

As an example, think about your bath at home and how much that can hold; a mini skip can hold around twelve times as much. In fact, you can fit around two and a half tons of packed rubble into a mini skip – pretty impressive for the smallest skip in our fleet!

Give us a call to discuss what you need your skip for and we’ll happily give you a free, no obligation quotation.

What can I put in my Skip?

What can I put in my Skip?

WHEN UNDERTAKING A PROJECT, EITHER DOMESTIC OR COMMERCIAL – THE PRODUCTION OF WASTE AS A BYPRODUCT IS INEVITABLE.

DISPOSING OF THIS ETHICALLY DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A CHORE – WITH SKIP HIRE FROM EMS TO SUIT ALL YOUR NEEDS.

Of course, depending on the nature of your project – your method of waste disposal will be affected, due to regulations surrounding the safe disposal of items such as asbestos, gas cylinders and solvents, to name but a few.

So, knowing this – we’ve compiled a handy list of what you should and shouldn’t be putting in your hired skip – what size of skip you will need and how many bin bags you can fit into your skip hired and delivered by EMS.

WHAT YOU SHOULD AND SHOULDN’T PUT IN YOUR SKIP

Generally, the rule of thumb is to avoid electrical items such as fridges. These sort of items are disposed of separately as they need degassing, due to their degrading properties.

We can take white goods, such as washing machines, dishwashers and cookers, to name a few.

As well as white goods, we can take plasterboard – at an additional cost, and tyres at an additional cost. Items such as batteries, paints (emulsion, but not gloss), can be included in general waste.

Due to the reports surrounding the danger of asbestos, companies are now required to comply with the law and dispose of the material by a specialist contractor.

These can either be instructed directly or through your local council. It is very important not to mix this with any other material in your skip.

WHICH SIZE SKIP SHOULD I HIRE FOR MY JOB?

Skip hire can range from a mini skip, holding up to 25 rubbish bags, to a 40-yard skip, holding up to 400 bin bags. In addition to these – there are many variations in between, that suit a variety of bespoke needs.

In addition to their different sizes, skips can be issued in different types, including open, closed, drop and RORO.

Ultimately, the size and types of skip you need will depend on the job in question – including the size and content of it. See th different sizes on our Skip Hire page as an indication of this.

Builders Skips – What you need to know!

Builders Skips – What you need to know!

SO WHAT ACTUALLY IS A BUILDERS SKIP? WELL THERE ARE LOTS OF EXPLAINATIONS BUT IN CONSTRUCTION, A SKIP IS USED FOR HOLDING WASTE AND DEBRIS PRODUCED BY WORKS SUCH AS BUILDING, DEMOLITION, LANDSCAPING, AND SO ON.

WHEN FULL IT IS LOADED ONTO THE BACK OF A LORRY AND TAKEN AWAY FOR THE WASTE TO BE DISPOSED OF AT OUR WASTE TRANSFER SITE AND USUALLY REPLACED WITH ANOTHER ONE.

SKIP HIRE FOR BUILDERS AND TRADE
Commercial skip hire tends to involve a fleet of skips of various sizes, while a sole trader can hire a builders skip for each job as and when they need to. There are convenient options for any scale of operation, from the smallest of jobs to the huge volumes of inert waste produced during demolition, for example.

Skips are measured in (cubic) yards. The standard builders skip size is 6 yards: that’s one of our medium skip sizes, which is available in different formats (open, closed and drop end) to cater to a range of sites and equipment. Drop end skips are great for wheelbarrow access, while open skips are easy to fill with earthmoving equipment.

Can you put builders rubble in a skip?
Soil and rubble – Can you put soil or rubble in a skip? Yes, you can put soil or rubble in a skip but you must tell us at the time of booking your skip.

SKIP SIZES AND COMPARISON

Not every job needs a standard sized builders skip. For smaller projects, or removing a small amount of rubble, mini skip hire offers a far more rugged and convenient alternative to using heavy duty refuse sacks. On the other end of the scale, large skips offer huge capacity: the equivalent of 80 bin bags in volume.

At 1.8 metres tall, a large skip hire is best reserved for large-scale domestic or smaller commercial jobs.

ROLL ON/ROLL OFF

For the biggest projects, you need the biggest skip size – and roll on/roll off (RO/RO) waste containers are the biggest in the business. Our RO/RO waste disposal containers are available up to a capacity of 40 cubic yards.

If you have enough space onsite, you may find these particularly useful if doing a complete home renovation project.

Can you put bricks into a skip?
Suitable items you can put in your skip include: Household items such as – wood, tiles, plaster, furniture, paper and cardboard, garden waste and clothes. Heavy materials such as – bricks, concrete, metals, pottery and clay, rubble and stones.

How do you fill a builders skip?

The key to efficiently filling a skip is to layer. Ideally different types of item will need to go into the skip at different times.Items should be sorted into these four categories:

  • Flat items.
  • Tessellate objects (e.g objects that can be stacked together, such as bricks)
  • Large or bulky items.
  • Loose debris.

What is classed as builders rubble?
Building rubble means waste produced during the construction, alteration, repair or demolition of any structure, and includes rubble, earth, rock and wood displaced during such a construction, alteration, repair or demolition

A BIT OF LOADER HISTORY

Volvo’s, or rather BM’s, first wheeled loader was the H10. But where did it come from?

To start with, engineers simply turned an agricultural tractor back-to-front. By placing the loader unit over the bigger wheels, they reasoned that it would be capable of lifting heavier loads.

The H10 wheeled loader was based on a series of different tractors, including the BM 470. The H10 was a major success at the time; it was the world’s first wheeled loader with a parallel linkage, double-acting lift rams and a purpose-designed attachment bracket.

In 1986, Volvo brought its first ‘L’ series loading shovel to the market – namely the L160. The ‘L’ designation is still in use today.

L means loader and the number indicates the full turn tipping load

FULLY LOADED

Whatever the job, we have the tools to get it done. Volvo offers a full range of Volvo buckets, including general purpose, grading,
refuse, light material, and more, to handle everything, from light material to heavy rocks. Built on decades of engineering excellence, Volvo buckets are optimized for Volvo wheel loaders and durably designed for all types of materials and tasks.

THE NEW L70 LOADING SHOVEL – AN UPDATED MODEL FOR OPTIMUM RESULTS

Its packed with innovative features that achieve up to 20% greater fuel efficiency than older models. Combining new optimized loading unit weight, redesigned counterweight, and increased top speed of 50km/h, facilitated by the optional lock-up function, the next-generation wheel loader delivers greater profitability in every load.
