What is Commercial Waste Management?

What is Commercial Waste Management?

EVER WONDERED WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOMESTIC AND COMMERCIAL WASTE IS? WELL NO MATTER HOW EFFICIENT A BUSINESS IS, WASTE WILL ALWAYS BE GENERATEd!

Some businesses produce regular office waste, while others have very specific requirements or hazardous waste considerations. The main thing is that no matter what kind of waste is produced, proper waste management is essential.

Find out more about waste management solutions for your businesses by getting touch with one of our offices.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BUSINESS WASTE

There are many kinds of waste, but the most common categories include:

  • – Commercial food waste
  • – General waste
  • – Dry mixed recycling
  • – Construction waste
  • – Hazardous waste

COMMERCIAL FOOD WASTE

Food waste is extremely complex. There are subcategories of commercial food waste with different solutions, like solid and liquid food waste from manufacturing, agriculture and processing – which can be processed into biofuels, animal feed or reclaimed water. This kind of waste can be processed off-site, but some very large manufacturing or agricultural operations will have their own waste processing facilities.

Food waste can be stored in digesters , which use bacteria to process waste into biogas and fertiliser. On-site composting can also be employed as a strategy for breaking down food waste, but it’s quite an intensive process that requires diligence.

Leftovers and food preparation waste from restaurants is generally stored locally in food waste bins – and the same goes for out of date food from shops. Food bins must be durable, easy to clean and sealable to avoid contamination and to stop rats and roaches entering them.

GENERAL WASTE

Similar to general domestic waste, but on a bigger scale. This is the most common kind of waste by far and for smaller operations, weekly local refuse collections will be enough – but for large offices with tens or hundreds of employees, waste management services will be required with high capacity bins and regular collections.

DRY MIXED RECYCLING

Almost every business will produce this kind of waste, from items ordered in or purchased. Retail packaging and transit waste is generally cardboard and plastics, which can be recycled.

CONSTRUCTION WASTE

Construction waste can be complex – especially if asbestos or other harmful waste materials are present.

Generally, inert construction waste can be recycled and repurposed – crushed into aggregates and backfill or simply recovered whole for reuse.

Skips and RORO waste containers can be used for storage and transport of waste, and fully managed site clearance services can oversee a project from start to finish.

HAZARDOUS WASTE

Asbestos can be deadly when disturbed, so it’s important to identify and deal with it appropriately. A trained expert with specialist training and experience can accurately identify all types of asbestos and advise on the best course of removal and disposal.

Tyres are hazardous waste, too. When they eventually break down, they produce harmful chemicals and toxic runoff, so they need to be disposed of carefully. Garages and tyre fitters must employ a waste disposal specialist that can effectively and safely manage the disposal of tyres.

WHY IS COMMERCIAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT?

Commercial waste management isn’t just important – it’s essential. It maintains public health and safety, and keeps businesses running smoothly. As an essential service, it often gets overlooked and ignored in favour of more attractive services.

It’s a good idea to review your waste management often – to make sure things are operating optimally and to see if you can find or negotiate a better deal for your business. For further information get in touch. We’re always happy to help.
