TIME TO CASH IN! SCRAP METAL PRICES AT AN ALL TIME HIGH

TIME TO CASH IN! SCRAP METAL PRICES AT AN ALL TIME HIGH

YOU MAY HAVE HEARD THAT THE PRICE OF SCRAP METAL HAS RISEN DRAMATICALLY THIS YEAR. EVER WONDERED WHY?

WHY ARE SCRAP METAL PRICES SO HIGH?

Well as we all know the Coronavirus pandemic forced ports to close, slowing down international exports. Producers of nonessential goods like scrap metal immediately felt the hit. The pandemic also halted the production of materials and processes necessary to generate scrap material, such as semiconductors and automotive supply chains

The outlook for 2021 has improved significantly as scrap market conditions, driven in part by constrained supply chains and rising prices, have seen a dramatic turnaround.

HOW ARE SCRAP METAL PRICES DETERMINED?

Understanding the processes involved when it comes to marketing your scrap metal is very crucial. The first important factor to put into consideration is transportation. Although if the scrap metal is a small volume around the house then you may not have problem with transportation; but if you own a firm or business that is into frequent production of scrap mental in large quantity, then the options for transporting the scraps need to be considered.

There are two best options which are: you can have the scrap yard collect it and as well sell the scrap on your behalf or you may contract a scrap haulage company. The most cost-effective and simplest is to deal directly with the scrap yard instead of reaching out to third-party haulage company to collect it for you. This is where we come in!

This is a factor that guarantees making money with selling scrap – selecting the right metals to search for. Obviously precious metals like silver and gold command the highest prices but Copper and brass are common metals that are also selling at high prices.

Another factor that needs to be considered is where to sell the scrap metal. Scrap yards have similar price tags and they accept most metals. The best option for a lot of people will be to visit the closest scrap yard or larger recycling facility.

With yards in both Exeter and Paignton we’re well equipped to deal with all your needs and offer you the best prices.

UK SCRAP METAL PRICES BY CITY

Did you know that Scrap Metal prices in the UK change between cities as they are dependent on local demand and supply. It’s expensive to transport large scale quantities of metal, and so your local market is usually your best bet to get the best valuation for your metal.

WHO’S BUYING YOUR SCRAP METAL?

Mainly dealers, who are required to be licensed and registered in order to trade scrap metal. Search the register of scrap metal dealers to be certain you are trading with a legal entity – or ask for their licence number, as dealers tend to be mobile and their addresses can be unreliable.

Here at EMS we hold all necessary licences and are more than happy to provide you with any information you may require.

Dealers in your local area will determine the price of scrap metal you will receive, and in the UK this price will be calculated as a £ per kg in most cases, except where catalytic converters are involved or in some other unique scrap metal cases.

They will determine their daily prices on a multitude of factors: a. Local Demand and Supply b. Market Trading Prices for the Metals c. If they have treatment facilities for the metal d. Specialisation e. Their own judgement

LET’S BREAK DOWN THESE FACTORS AFFECTING SCRAP METAL PRICES HERE:

A. LOCAL DEMAND AND SUPPLY
Market forces will affect the prices of scrap metals on a local basis (by UK city or nationally). This might be impacted by seasonality, export/import tariffs. For example, there is likely to be a higher demand for local scrap metal due to increased import costs caused by Brexit. However, Sterling has weakened against the Dollar and the Euro, which has negatively impacted export prices

B. MARKET TRADING PRICES FOR METALS
Commodities trading includes the trading of metals which are closely tied to commons crap metal sources. The LME is the international hub for industrial metal trading and you can check the daily metal price updates. This is a great way to understand the specific changes in scrap metal prices in the UK and globally

C. TREATMENT FACILITIES FOR THE SCRAP METALS
Some cities have a higher proportion of dealers with treatment facilities in-house. This means reduced travel of scrap metal, which drives down costs and increases prices.
Treatment facilities include sorting, crushing, cutting, shearing and baling

D. SPECIALISATION
Different scrap metal dealers focus on different scrap metal materials. One dealer might concentrate on aluminium as they have buyers in Europe with a specific need, whilst another might only purchase aluminium cans. The more your scrap metal matches their specialisation, the higher the price you will get for your scrap metal in the UK!

E. THEIR OWN JUDGEMENT
Every scrap metal dealer applies their own judgement as to where they believe scrap metal prices in the UK, and globally, will head.

We offer highly competitive prices and deal with everything at our treatment facility so just give us a call to let us know what you’ve got.

Whatever you’ve got hanging around and regardless how much, we’re the people to call. Our prices are extremely competitive and our service second to none.

A HISTORY LESSON ABOUT EMS – WHAT A DIFFERENCE 70 YEARS MAKES!

A HISTORY LESSON ABOUT EMS – WHAT A DIFFERENCE 70 YEARS MAKES!

AS MOST OF YOU ARE AWARE EMS WASTE SERVICES IS A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS WITH FAMILY VALUES RUNNING THROUGH THE COMPANY FROM DIRECTOR TO OPERATOR. WE FOCUS HEAVILY ON SERVICE, IMAGE AND CUSTOMER COMMITMENT.

Part of the Stuart Group, EMS is a leading waste management company providing turn key solutions for business. We provide bespoke waste management solutions for our clients who trust us to provide the right solution first time every time.

BUT HOW DID IT ALL START?

1940’s – The EMS Waste Services story dates right back to the 1940s, when Mr Alf Stuart bought a second-hand Dodge and began to transport cattle.

By the time that brothers, Roy and Ross, were leaving school, the business had expanded enough to bring them on board and sales were thriving.

To meet the demands of the changing industry, they built a new repair workshop and cattle lairage which was large enough to accommodate an impressive 1,000 cattle.

1977 – They were ready to expand again – opening a new garage repair business, Stuart’s Commercials, which became the official Volvo Truck Dealer for Devon.

1980’s – Stuart’s was ready to move out of the cattle haulage business and began growing their fledgling storage business – boosted unexpectedly by the Miner’s Strike of 1984. By the end of the 80’s, they were growing a healthy farm enterprise. Roy also opened up an Inert Landfill Site at Hill Barton, spotting future growth opportunities in waste management.

2004 – Building on earlier success, the Stuarts’ garage business took over the Volvo Dealerships at Saltash and Redruth in Cornwall relocating the Saltash depot to a new workshop in Plymouth and investing in improvements at the Redruth site.

Meanwhile, the recycling side of the business was hotting up, and the Stuarts bought EMS Skip Hire and Waste Services; an already successful business.

2012 – 2019 – They brought Devon Contract Waste skips, AJS Skips, Cox Waste, ASAP Skip Hire, Bay Skips, County Skip Hire, Skip It and Dusty Bin Skip Hire into the fold, along with a new scrap site, strengthening the range of services offered to Devon customers.

EMS promote Recycling and how we can impact on the environment at Farmwise in Devon

EMS at Farmwise

The 2019 Farmwise event was a fun, family-friendly event held in Devon. Its main aim was to educate children (and their parents!) a little more about where food comes from and also how key proper waste recycling is to protect the environment. It was also designed to help enthuse the next generation of farmers coming into the sector and help to emphasise the importance of farming to rural economies. EMS Waste Management was only too happy to attend after being invited down by the event organisers. It not only allowed us to share our expertise around waste management with others but also to help make the event more fun for all.

EMS at Farmwise Devon

On 15th October 2019, one of our experienced drivers headed down to the event in our state-of-the-art skip loader. The organisers had asked us to attend in order to give youngsters more insight into the waste society produces and how essential recycling is for the planet. Once there, our vehicle got lots of positive attention from the kids and also generated lots of questions. Amongst other things, we explained how waste is segregated on the EMS site, how certain materials are dealt with and where they go to be recycled. We also explained how waste can be turned into biomass fuel or other energy sources. Perhaps the biggest hit though was when the children were invited to sit in our truck! This was not only lots of fun but also helped them understand more about the work EMS does and how important it is for the environment.

What determines the scrap metal price?

You might not be aware but we also offer a scrap metal service from our base in Paignton. There is always a lot of hype surrounding the prices associated with scrap so we thought we’d try to explain!

While selling scrap metal might seem far removed from the likes of the stock market, they have a lot of similarities. Prices can change almost constantly, which is why companies are always hesitant to display prices on their websites.

How often do they change?

It may come as a surprise to a lot of people, but the change can be hourly. The pricing of metal will often change with peaks in manufacturing and trade. There are also obviously a huge number of metals and they all have different prices.

As with a lot of industries, a lot of the pricing can come down to supply and demand. There are also several other reasons for it to change too. There are also many reasons why one place will charge you differently to another.

The driving factors

Scrap companies have to sell the metal on at some point. When they do they will also have a price they receive. If this changes then the price of the metal will change with it. With a higher sale value, a scrap metal company would be able to spend more on their scrap metal.

This, again, can come down to supply and demand. If there are industries in need of the recycled metal they will pay more for it, and scrap metal companies will pay more for their scrapped metal too. It’s a chain of demand that can constantly alter the scrap metal price.

Other factors

There are other key factors too. If there is a bulk amount of scrap metal then better deals might be offered. Also, the likes of bad weather can halt construction needs and the location of the scrap yard can also change prices if it’s in a prime location.

As you can imagine, the amount of metal transported around the world is incredible. The likes of India and China account for a huge percentage of scrap metal and if their demands change, the whole industry can change.

Get the best price

Hopefully you now better understand the volatile world of scrap metal pricing. When you call EMS we’ll be able to give you the best price around. While a whole lot of global factors affect the price, we will always make sure it’s the best one you can get.
