Bay Skips provides skips for The Big Plastic Fish Contest!

Bay Skips have provided both Torquay and Brixham Marinas with two lockable skips for their contest to collect plastic to help reduce pollution and protect marine life in the local area.

It is free to get involved, and the marina is encouraging members of the public to come down to either site. To join in the fun, simply bring along your own safety gear, a willing group of friends, and start fishing away for plastic! Once finished, you can deposit plastic in one of our skips provided at each site. You can attend as many times as you like from the 25th of August to the 1st of September, so why not spread a few brief visits out over the entire week?

The value of the work being undertaken at Torquay and Brixham Marinas should not be underestimated. According to a new Ellen MacArthur Foundation report, “at least 8 million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean every year. Shockingly, this is equivalent to dumping the contents of an entire garbage truck into the ocean every minute. If no action is taken, this is expected to increase to two per minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050”. This would be devastating for all sea life and would have an enormously detrimental effect on more than just our fishing industries. It would have a knock-on effect on our entire ecosystem, disrupting its fine balance and endangering countless species.

Ultimately, the foundation is now warning that there will be more waste plastic in the sea than fish by 2050 unless the industry cleans up its act. This is where clean-up schemes come in. Having more companies such as Bay Skips getting on board with such schemes as The Big Plastic Fish Contest is important in engendering a more ecologically friendly economy and educating people about their waste disposal habits. So come down and show your support today!
